FUNDAMENTAL.ZONE

De tentoonstelling is een vervolg op FUNDAMENTEEL (2022), dat toen mede werd samengesteld door George Meertens in de Halle. In 2026 keert hij terug als curator met FUNDAMENTEEL 2. In deze nieuwe editie bouwt Meertens verder op zijn eerdere onderzoek en laat hij zien hoe materiaal, vorm en handeling samenkomen om het beeld in zijn meest wezenlijke betekenis te onthullen.

Onder de titel ‘het zijn dat ons bezighoudt’ brengt Meertens een zorgvuldige selectie van internationale kunstenaars samen. De tentoonstelling ontvouwt zich als een reeks van negen hoofdstukken, verspreid over de exporuimtes. Elk hoofdstuk belicht een ander aspect van wat het betekent om mens te zijn: het ontvangen, de aarde, het licht, het denken, de dood, het geheugen, de geborgenheid en het verwijlen.

Samen vormen deze thema’s een gelaagde en zintuiglijke ervaring van onze aanwezigheid in de wereld — een uitnodiging om stil te staan bij wat ons bestaan draagt en betekenis geeft.

Het zijn dat ons bezighoudt

De eerste vermelding van de tentoonstellingsruimte De Halle dateert uit 1431. Het was toen in gebruik als markthal voor linnen, laken en vlees. In 1679 werd het omgebouwd tot stadhuis. Verder werd het onder andere nog gebruikt als politiebureau, school en gevangenis. In 2006 is het gebouw grondig gerestaureerd en als tentoonstellingsruimte in gebruik genomen. Het gebouw heeft meerdere kamers, gangen en trappenhuizen. In de verschillende ruimtes breng ik de kunstenaars samen met een complementaire polariteit om zo de spanningen en potenties in onze 'zijnsgronden' zichtbaar te maken.

Met plezier heb ik gewerkt aan een concept waarin 31 internationale kunstenaars een plaats vinden. De fundamentele vraag die Martin Heidegger zich stelt is: ‘Waarom is er eigenlijk zijnd en niet veeleer niets?’. Met deze vraag in gedachte heb ik gekozen voor kunstenaars die het ‘zijn’ en haar verborgen werkelijkheid onderzoeken en in hun (abstracte) beeldtaal een helder concept met een overtuigende poëtische kracht uitdrukken.

It is what concerns us

This exhibition is a follow-up to FUNDAMENTAL (2022), which was co-curated by George Meertens at de Halle. In 2026, he will return as curator with FUNDAMENTAL 2. In this new edition, Meertens builds on his previous research and demonstrates how material, form, and action converge to reveal the image in its most essential meaning.

Under the title 'It is what concerns us' Meertens brings together a careful selection of international artists. The exhibition unfolds as a series of nine chapters, spread across the exhibition spaces. Each chapter highlights a different aspect of what it means to be human: conceiving, the earth, light, thinking, death, memory, sense of belonging and lingering.

Together, these themes form a multi-layered and sensory experience of our presence in the world—an invitation to reflect on what sustains and gives meaning to our existence.

It is what concerns us

The first mention of the exhibition space De Halle dates from 1431. At that time it was used as a market hall for linen, cloth and meat. In 1679 it was converted into a city hall. It was also used as a police station, school and prison. In 2006 the building was thoroughly restored and put into use as an exhibition space. The building has several rooms, corridors and stairwells. In the different spaces I bring together the artists with a complementary polarity in order to make the tensions and potentials in our 'grounds of being' visible.

I have enjoyed working on a concept in which 31 international artists find a place. One of the questions that Martin Heidegger asks himself fundamently: 'Why is there actually being and not rather nothing?'

With this question in mind, I chose artists who explore ‘being’ and her concealed reality and express in their (abstract) visual language a clear concept with a convincing poetic power.
