Maksym Mazur werkt met verschillende media en onderzoekt in tijd en ruimte hoe de materialen en vormen vanuit een creatief proces zich verhouden tot de werkelijkheid, hoe ze als het ware de werkelijkheid ontsluiten.

Maksym Mazur is medeoprichter van  Instytut Avtomatyky en Lab 207.

"'Ex Libris'

In deze serie werk ik met afgestoten bibliotheekboeken – publicaties die uit de circulatie zijn genomen en bestemd waren om als oud papier te worden weggegooid. Ik ben geïnteresseerd in het boek, niet alleen als drager van kennis, maar ook als materieel object dat sporen bewaart van een bepaald waardensysteem, denkwijze en historisch moment.

In mijn werken combineer ik boeken met beton en staalwapening. Door het inkapselen in beton wordt de tekst gedeeltelijk verduisterd, ontoegankelijk of gefragmenteerd, terwijl het boek zelf zijn conventionele functie verliest en een nieuwe materiële vorm aanneemt. Het houdt op een leesobject te zijn en wordt een artefact.

Deze transformatie hangt samen met vragen over de historische instabiliteit van kennis. Wat in een bepaalde periode als belangrijk en noodzakelijk wordt beschouwd, kan later zijn relevantie verliezen, in de marges van het cultureel geheugen terechtkomen of er helemaal uit verdwijnen. In deze werken fungeert beton niet alleen als constructie-materiaal, maar ook als conserverings-middel dat informatie tegelijkertijd verbergt en beschermt.

De objecten in de Ex Libris-serie lijken op museumstukken uit de toekomst – fragmenten van een onbekende beschaving waarmee toekomstige generaties ons heden zouden kunnen reconstrueren. De boeken verschijnen als archeologisch bewijs van een tijdperk waarin kennis, geheugen en materiële cultuur niet in hun oorspronkelijke vorm voortleven, maar als overblijfselen die de tand des tijds hebben doorstaan."

"'Ex Libris'

In this series, I work with deaccessioned library books—publications withdrawn from circulation and destined to be discarded as waste paper. I am interested in the book not only as a carrier of knowledge but also as a material object that preserves traces of a particular system of values, way of thinking, and historical moment.

In my works, I combine books with concrete and steel reinforcement. Through the process of encasement in concrete, the text becomes partially obscured, inaccessible, or fragmented, while the book itself loses its conventional function and acquires a new material form. It ceases to be an object for reading and becomes an artifact.

This transformation is connected to questions about the historical instability of knowledge. What is considered important and necessary in one period may later lose its relevance, move to the margins of cultural memory, or disappear from it altogether. In these works, concrete functions not only as a structural material but also as a means of preservation that simultaneously conceals and protects information.

The objects in the Ex Libris series resemble museum artifacts from the future—fragments of an unknown civilization through which future generations might reconstruct our present. The books appear as archaeological evidence of an era in which knowledge, memory, and material culture survive not in their original form, but as remnants that have endured the passage of time."
